4th - 12th Grade: Two 3-Week Summer Sessions

Session 1 ~ June 19-July 7

We will be closed Tuesday, July 4, but have class on Friday, July 7.

Monday-Thursday

Beyond Arithmetic I: 8:30 – 10:00; Instructor: Miss Nancy
The Why behind the How

Sure, you know how to multiply 4/5 by 15/16, but what about:

Manipulation of fractions is an important skill in both Pre-Algebra and Algebra.   Finally understand why you do what you do to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions the way you do. Impress your friends with how easily you work really big numbers. Master exponents, both positive and negative, which will allow you to use scientific notation.

On-Demand Writing I: 10:15 – 11:45
You get back an essay and all that's written at the top is: "Good job".  How do you know what to change, how to improve?  We'll be writing every day, using Judy Reeve's A Writer's Book of Days: A Spirited Companion and Lively Muse for the Writing Life to provide prompts for our own writing group.  You'll learn how to revise your work and help others revise theirs.

Greek & Latin Roots I: 12:00 – 12:45, 1:15 – 2:00; Instructor: Miss Nancy

(with a 30 minute break for lunch)

Tired of memorizing spelling lists?  Every week requires that you start over.  Master Greek and Latin roots and you'll find new words can be understood by taking them apart.  Ever wondered what "antidisestablishmentarianism" means?  Sign up and find out.  You'll also learn how to use a dictionary quickly and how to understand what you find.  And nothing's more fun than finding cool synonyms for the overused words that teachers dislike.

Logic / Critical Thinking I: 2:15 – 3:45; Instructor: Miss Nancy

Love to solve puzzles?  Fascinated by conundrums? Learn the thinking tricks (algorithms) you need so you can use logic to solve problems.  You’ll learn how to use Venn diagrams to evaluate syllogisms, have fun with matrix logic, lateral logic, and analogies, as well as the advanced techniques for Sudoku puzzles and other thinking games.  Matrix logic is now found on the SAT.

Intro to Physics I: 4:00 – 5:30; Instructor: Miss Nancy

In this new class, students will be introduced to Newtonian physics through fun, hands-on experiments, while also learning the mathematics at the heart of the discipline.  In this session, we'll be focusing on Newton's Laws of Motion, vectors, and projectiles.

Session 2 ~ July 10-July 27

Monday-Thursday

Beyond Arithmetic II: 8:30 – 10:00; Instructor: Miss Nancy

The Why behind the How

Get ready for more advanced math with a review of Order of Operations using fractions, including fractions with variables. Learn how to translate those pesky word problems into equations so you always know which operation you need to use. Solve one-step and multi-step equations using Inverse Operations, and factor variable expressions. A basic understanding of Order of Operations with integers is preferred.

On-Demand Writing II: 10:15 – 11:45; Instructor: Miss Nancy

As in Writing I, we'll be writing every day, using Judy Reeve's A Writer's Book of Days: A Spirited Companion and Lively Muse for the Writing Life. In this second session we'll work on longer-term projects: writing and editing descriptive paragraphs and learning how to organize an essay before you start writing.

Greek & Latin Roots II: 12:00 – 12:45, 1:15 – 2:00; Instructor: Miss Nancy

(with a 30 minute break for lunch)

This session begins with the number prefixes.  Geometry and chemistry are much easier when you know that "tetra-" means 4, so a tetrachloride has four chlorine atoms.  Master more advanced words and learn the value of syntactic markers - those suffixes that tell you a word's part of speech even if you don't know what the word means.

Logic / Critical Thinking II: 2:15 – 3:45; Instructor: Miss Nancy

If you took Logic / Critical Thinking I, this will give you more practice.  If you didn't, don't worry, you'll have fun solving puzzles and being fascinated by conundrums.  Learn the thinking tricks (algorithms) you need to you can use logic to solve problems.  You'll learn how to use Venn diagrams to evaluate syllogisms, have fun with matrix logic, lateral logic, and analogies, as well as the advanced techniques for Sudoku puzzles and other thinking games. Matrix logic is now found on the SAT.

Intro to Physics II: 4:00 – 5:30; Instructor: Miss Nancy

In this new class, students will be introduced to Newtonian physics through fun hands-on experiments, while also learning the mathematics at the heart of the discipline.  In this session we'll be focusing on momentum, work, and energy.

Classes run Monday-Thursday each week.
